Hi.

Welcome to the Lifgun-Blog. I am Markus Moser and i document my adventures in sailing around the globe. Now i’m getting ready for the Ostar race 2020!

Propulsion and stuff….

Propulsion and stuff….

The new Lifgun will not be a zero emission boat, but it aims for that direction. It was a huge amount of work for the architects and also for Gernot (he is responsible for all the electric systems) which were taking care of the changed concept and implemented this into the Pegasus 50. The main idea is, to become more independent from fossil energy, not only when using the motors but first of all, during sailing.  As you know I was using a watt and sea hydro generator for years now, this was and is a total nice way to gain electric energy to drive all the boat systems, which are obviously extremely important when short or singlehanded under way. With the two Oceanvolt electric motors a constant production of electricity is possible when sailing above 5 knots. Almost 40 kw of Lithium batteries should give you an independence which is sufficient, especially when sailing. But the main idea is really, to regenerate power! This was the initial setup, sounds not so complicated…..Please have look on the chosen concept in the scheme below.

The two motors also had an impact on almost all other important boat system. For example she will not have a bow thruster, the maneuverability should be extremely well with the two engines – so no more thruster (believe me or not….I’m totally happy with this solution). Further on, she also will be equipped with the smallest possible DC genset to extend the range when using the motors and driving her with cruising speed. And we had to find a solution for the heating and hot water production. For that we found a system which is occasionally diesel driven and comes from a Canada based company named “International thermal research” (https://itrheat.com). The hot water production will be either over electricity or if necessary, with diesel. With this setup, Lifgun should be able to sail huge legs with only using an absolute minimum of fossil fuel.
